Rajiv Gandhi Convict: ‘Today, the life of a prisoner serving life sentence inside the Central Jail was better than spending life in a special camp carrying the tag of a ‘freed prisoner’.’ This is to say of MT Santhan alias T Suthenthiraraj, a Sri Lankan citizen convicted of Rajiv Gandhi’s assassination. Santhan was sentenced to life imprisonment for the assassination of former Prime Minister of India, Rajiv Gandhi. Now he has written a letter from his special camp, appealing to return home.
On November 11, 2022, the Supreme Court ordered the release of 6 convicts serving life imprisonment in the Rajiv Gandhi assassination case. The day after the order, Nalini, Sriharan, Santhan, Robert Payas, Jayakumar and Ravichandran were released from prison after 32 years. But here a screw got stuck. Nalini and Ravichandran were freed from their families and allowed to visit the family but the other four were kept in a special camp in Trichy Central Jail. This was done because all four were Sri Lankan citizens.
Santhan has written an open letter from his cell in the Special Camp of Trichy Jail. In this letter he has said that he cannot even see the sun. Through the letter, he has appealed to Tamils from all over the world to raise their voice so that he can return to his country.
Haven’t seen mother for 32 years – Santhan
Santhan said in the letter, I am the Prime Minister Narendra Modi, I have written letters to the Union Home Minister and Foreign Minister that arrangements should be made to send me to Sri Lanka. I requested the authorities to allow me to go to the Sri Lankan Deputy High Commission office in Chennai where I could get my passport renewed. Till now I have not received any reply.
He wrote in the letter, I have not met my mother for the last 32 years and I feel guilty that I am not able to help her at this stage of age. The authorities have kept us alive but are not letting us live.
room windows closed
Santhan said, I am lodged in the special camp inside Trichy Central Jail for the last six months. There are a total of 120 foreigners in the camp here, out of which about 90 are from Sri Lanka. He has further written that four of us, who were acquitted by the Supreme Court in the Rajiv Gandhi case, have been kept in rooms and their windows have been closed with tin sheets.
Santhan said that he is not even allowed to talk on the phone. Only blood relatives can meet the people living in the camp. After all, for a foreigner like me, where can one have blood relations in India?
