During that time Lalu Prasad Yadav was the Railway Minister in the UPA-1 government. Lalu Yadav did not heed the suggestion of his cabinet colleague Ram Vilas Paswan. When the results of the 2009 Lok Sabha elections came, Lalu Yadav’s RJD suffered a huge loss. Ram Vilas Paswan also lost from Hajipur.

According to Paswan’s prediction, the Congress came to power for the second time in a row. Since then Lalu Yadav had started calling Ram Vilas Paswan a meteorologist, which meant that Paswan used to sense which way the wind was blowing in politics.

Lalu Yadav had also privately admitted that not following Paswan’s suggestion was one of his biggest political blunders as the RJD was thrown out of the UPA and the RJD chief had to go to jail in 2013.

Political career of Ram Vilas Paswan

Paswan was a Lok Sabha MP for 9 times and a Rajya Sabha MP for 2 times. He started his political career as a member of the Samyukta Socialist Party and was elected to the Bihar Legislative Assembly in 1969. When the Lok Dal was formed, Paswan joined it and was made the general secretary of the party.

Paswan was also among the leaders who opposed the Emergency in the country and had to go to jail. 1977 He reached the Lok Sabha for the first time as a member of Janata Party from Hajipur constituency. After this he was re-elected MP in 1980, 1989, 1991 (Rosda), 1996, 1998, 1999, 2004 and 2014.

In 2000, he formed the Lok Janshakti Party and became its chief. In 2004, he joined the UPA government and became Union Minister in the Ministry of Chemicals and Fertilizers and Ministry of Steel. In 2021, Ram Vilas Paswan was posthumously awarded the Padma Bhushan, India’s third highest civilian award.

Ram Vilas Paswan was born on 5 July 1946 in a family living in Shaharbanni, Khagaria district of Bihar. His father’s name is Jamun Paswan and mother’s name is Siya Devi. The meaning of the word ‘Paswan’ is described as a bodyguard or watchman.

Paswan did his graduation in law. Later he also obtained MA degree. In 1969, he was selected as Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) in Bihar Police. In the same year, he became MLA for the first time on the ticket of Samyukta Socialist Party.

Self became ‘government’

Ram Vilas Paswan once made an interesting mention about the beginning of his political career. He had told, “In 1969, I was selected in both the police and the assembly together. Then one of my friends asked, tell me, do you want to become a government or a servant? Then I chose politics. ”He died on 8 October 2020 at the age of 74 after a long illness.
