Militants disguised as security personnel gunned down 3 people on the pretext of search operation

Manipur Violence: Another incident has come to light on Friday (June 9) from a village in Manipur’s Imphal West district affected by caste violence. Where the militants disguised as security personnel called some people out of the house on the pretext of a search operation and opened fire on them, killing three people and injuring two others.

Officials said that the incident took place in Khoken village on the border of Kangpoki and Imphal West districts. The militants are believed to be from the Meitei community. He said that the security forces, who were on regular patrolling of the village, reached there after hearing the gunshots, but by then the militants had fled from the area. According to officials, they had shot and killed three people before fleeing.

Special investigation team was formed

Officials said that the bodies of all three have been recovered by the Assam Rifles. Later, a joint team of Manipur Police, Assam Rifles and Army launched a search operation. Violence broke out between the two communities in Manipur on May 3 after a ‘tribal solidarity march’ was taken out against the Meitei community’s demand for Scheduled Tribe (ST) status.

Officials said on Friday (June 8) that the Central Investigation Agency (CBI) is probing six cases related to the violence handed over by the Manipur government. He told that a Special Investigation Team (SIT) headed by an officer of the rank of Deputy Inspector General (DIG) has been formed for this incident.

10,000 soldiers deployed to restore peace

Home Minister Amit Shah, during his visit to the northeastern state, had announced a CBI inquiry into six cases related to the Manipur violence. Of these, five FIRs are related to criminal conspiracy and one FIR is related to general conspiracy. The CBI had sent Joint Director Ghanshyam Upadhyay to coordinate with the state authorities and on his return the SIT was formed.

Significantly, violent clashes had started in Manipur after protesting against the demand of the Meitei community for granting Scheduled Tribe (ST) status. So far, about 100 people have died in this violence and more than 300 people have been injured. About 10,000 soldiers of Army and Assam Rifles have been deployed to restore peace in the state.
