National mourning on the demise of former Emir of Qatar, tricolor will remain at half mast, Government of India’s decision

The Indian government has declared one day of national mourning after the death of former Emir of Qatar Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani. There will be national mourning in India on 13th July. On this day, the national flag will remain at half mast throughout the country. Also, no official entertainment program will be organized.

Expressing grief over the demise of the former Emir of Qatar, PM Modi has described him as a visionary leader. Also said that he remained a true friend of India. While posting on X, PM Modi has said that we are deeply saddened by the demise of Father Emir of Qatar His Highness Sheikh Hum bin Khalifa Al Thani. He was a visionary leader. He took Qatar to higher levels of development and prosperity. We remember him as a true friend. I had the privilege of meeting him during my last visit to Qatar in February 2024. May his soul rest in eternal peace. Apart from this, Parliamentary Affairs and Minority Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju is expected to visit Qatar soon to deliver a condolence message on behalf of the Government of India.

Leaders around the world have expressed condolences on the demise of the former Emir of Qatar. Pakistan PM Shehbaz Sharif and UAE PM Sheikh Mohammed have also expressed condolence on the demise of former Emir of Qatar Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani. Sharif has paid tribute to Sheikh Hamad, calling him a great leader and politician.

UAE PM Sheikh Mohammed wrote that my deepest condolences to people like my brother Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani and the brothers and sisters of Qatar. We have lost our dear father Sheikh Amir Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani. A big loss for all of us. May God have mercy on them. Give them a high place in heaven. Give patience and courage to the people of Qatar and their loved ones. We all belong to God. In the end we have to go back to them.

Who was Sheikh Hamad?
Hamad joined the Qatar Armed Forces in 1971 after completing his school education in the UK. According to Alan Fromherz’s book Qatar A Modern History, he later staged a bloodless coup in 1995 and took power.
