No English No Admission! Loreto College’s decision created stir, apologized

Calcutta Loreto College: Calcutta University’s Loreto College’s decision to deny admission for not studying in English medium created a stir, after which the college apologized. After this decision of the college, many sections of the people of the state expressed their displeasure on social media and demonstrations started, due to which the college had to withdraw its decision.

The process for taking undergraduate admission in West Bengal began on Saturday (July 1), with the Catholic body announcing online that applicants from Bengali and Hindi medium schools are not welcome. A note accompanying the children selected for the 2023-24 Undergraduate program read that candidates from local medium schools were not considered for admission, as all instructions, examinations and books in the institute are in English.

The college issued this order
Established in 1912 near the Park Street area of ​​South Kolkata, the college policy states that all lectures at Loreto College are in English, therefore it is very important for the students to know English. Students should have good knowledge in English, should be able to perform well in their written work, oral exam. The tests will have to be answered in English only. Our Open Shelf Library has only English Test Books. Regional language books like Bengali or Hindi are not available in the college library. English is the only medium of instruction in Loreto College.

Protests started after this decision of the college. The photo of the notice issued by the college started becoming increasingly viral on social media and created a stir. Also, Calcutta University has sought information from Loreto College as to why such a guideline was issued.
