India signed an agreement with Indonesia on Tuesday (July 7) regarding BrahMos missile. On one hand, this will strengthen the country’s relations with South East Asian countries and on the other hand, the country’s domestic defense industry will get a boost. Besides, Indonesia is also going to buy ‘Astra’ air-to-air missiles made in India. Developed by the Defense Research and Development Organization (DRDO), ‘Astra’ is a ‘beyond-visual-range’ missile, which is designed to track and destroy rapidly changing enemy aircraft.

India is also likely to supply additional batteries of BrahMos supersonic cruise missile to Indonesia. These agreements were made during Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Indonesia, which was the first leg of his three-nation tour. Prime Minister Modi said, ‘The growing trust between our countries is strengthening our defence, security and maritime cooperation. Today, we have agreed to an agreement to enhance defense exchanges, disaster management and industrial cooperation.

BrahMos world’s fastest supersonic cruise missile

BrahMos is considered to be one of the fastest supersonic cruise missiles in the world. This missile can be fired from land, sea and in some cases also from air platforms. Due to its accurate firepower and high speed, many countries have shown interest in it. This announcement has come at a time when the Prime Minister Narendra Modi On tour to Indonesia. This is his first visit to the South-East Asian country after the year 2023. During this visit, many important issues like defence, maritime security, trade and strategic cooperation are being discussed between the two countries.

The supply of BrahMos and Astra missiles will further strengthen the defense relations between India and Indonesia. It also reflects India’s defense production capacity and its growing presence in the global defense market. In the last few years, along with increasing self-reliance in the defense sector, India is also increasing the export of its defense products. This possible agreement with Indonesia is being considered a big step in that direction.
