PM Modi and Rishi Sunak hug, British High Commission tweeted, ‘strong friendship’

G7 Summit Hiroshima: Prime Minister Narendra Modi met his British counterpart Rishi Sunak on Sunday (May 21) on the sidelines of the G7 summit in Hiroshima, Japan. Both the leaders decided to continue this ambitious deal during the talks on the India-UK Free Trade Agreement (FTA).

PM Modi tweeted, “The meeting with Prime Minister Rishi Sunak was very productive. We discussed increasing cooperation in trade, innovation, science and other such areas.” The Ministry of External Affairs tweeted, “Promoting the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership. Prime Minister Narendra Modi had productive talks with British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak in Hiroshima. The two leaders met to take stock of the progress made in the FTA negotiations between India and Britain Also reviewed the bilateral strategic partnership.

The Ministry of External Affairs said Modi and Sunak agreed to deepen cooperation in a wide range of areas such as trade and investment, science and technology, higher education and people-to-people ties between the two countries.

India and the UK have been negotiating an FTA since January last year with the aim of agreeing on a comprehensive agreement that is expected to significantly increase bilateral trade ties between the two countries to an estimated £34 billion by 2022. The ninth round of India-UK FTA talks between the two countries concluded last month with detailed discussions in several policy areas.

Modi has shared pictures of his conversation with the British PM. He wrote, “Useful discussion with UK PM Rishi Sunak on the sidelines of the G-7 Summit in Hiroshima.” The official Twitter account of the British High Commission in India retweeted PM Modi’s post and shared more pictures of the leaders hugging. The caption read, “A strong friendship.”

Explain that according to the official figures of the British government, India was the 12th largest trading partner of Britain in the last four quarters at the end of the third quarter of 2022. Trade between the two countries was 2.1 percent of Britain’s total trade.
