17th Indian Cooperative Congress: Prime Minister Narendra Modi And Union Cooperative Minister Amit Shah participated in the 17th Indian Cooperative Congress program on the occasion of International Cooperative Day. Addressing here, Amit Shah said that the cooperative movement is 115 years old in our country. Since independence, the main demand of the workers of cooperative sector was that the Ministry of Cooperation should be made separate. The entire work of the cooperative should be done under this ministry.
Amit Shah said, ‘Prime Minister Modi has given us an independent ministry by fulfilling this demand of ours for 75 years and I see that a lot of changes have become possible in the field of cooperatives by becoming an independent ministry. This is expected to happen in future as well. The Indian Cooperative Union is in a way the apex organization of the cooperative sector and this union has played a very good role in taking the cooperative to the heights. It has also coordinated and made efforts.
‘Cooperatives account for 19% of the economy’
Union Minister Amit Shah said that the cooperative movement has achieved many achievements in this century. Cooperatives account for 19% of the economy in agricultural credit distribution, 35% in fertilizer distribution, 25% in fertilizer production and more than 35% in sugar production.
Amit Shah further said, cooperatives have 9 percent share in the purchase, sale and production of milk, 13 percent in the purchase of wheat, 20 percent in the purchase of paddy. Along with this, a lot of work has been done for the livelihood of the small class through many credit co-operative societies, housing societies. Before independence, a joint secretary under the Ministry of Agriculture used to look after the entire work of cooperatives. This caused many problems. PM Modi has got rid of all these problems by providing a separate ministry.
