Andhra Pradesh BJP President PVN Madhav said, ‘Today we have the privilege of visiting the multi-dimensional Polavaram Project which is being developed as a national project. This project got new momentum after the NDA government came to power in 2014. Prime Minister Narendra Modi ensured that all the flood-affected villages were merged with Andhra Pradesh, paving the way for the project.
He said, ‘Polavaram was declared a national project. An ordinance was issued for this. On the request of Andhra Pradesh Government, the Central Government handed over the responsibility of the construction work of the project to the State Government. Chief Minister N. Under the leadership of Chandrababu Naidu, the work of the project progressed rapidly and many important phases have been completed so far. The construction of the main spillway has also been completed, while the construction of the earth-cum-rockfill dam is in progress.

He said, ‘We inspected the left canal, head regulator and other construction works. The pace of work is satisfactory and we are confident that the remaining work will also be completed soon. After the completion of the project, water will be supplied to North Andhra region under North Andhra Sujala Shravanthi Scheme, which will provide irrigation facility to about five lakh acres of agricultural land.
Many states will benefit after the completion of the project
PVN Madhav said, ‘About 23.44 TMC water will be provided to Visakhapatnam for drinking and industrial use, which will be a major achievement of this project. Additionally, a 960 MW hydropower project is being developed at a cost of approximately Rs 4,500 crore. Besides, there is also a provision for navigation channel in this project.
He said, ‘Many other irrigation projects are also expected to be started in future under this initiative. The Polavaram project will provide stability not only to Andhra Pradesh but also to the Krishna basin by diverting about 80 TMC of Godavari water towards Rayalaseema. Along with this, Telangana, Karnataka, Chhattisgarh and Odisha will also benefit from better utilization of Godavari river water.
He further said, ‘This is a historic achievement. The state and central governments are working together to complete this project soon and we are extremely happy to see its progress today. We also express our gratitude to MEIL for providing all the necessary facilities related to the project and providing detailed information.
