The Supreme Court on Friday (September 6, 2024) dismissed a petition challenging the order of the Bombay High Court, which disposed of the petition directing to provide drinking water and other facilities to cricket players during practice or informal matches on public grounds in Mumbai.
The Supreme Court reprimanded the lawyer and asked what do you have to do with these problems. The players will take care of these issues themselves. A bench of Justice A S Oka and Justice A G Masih was hearing this case.
A bench of Justices A S Oka and A G Masih said, “What kind of PIL is this? If there are no toilets for cricketers, they will see to it themselves. Why should a lawyer worry about it?”
The bench was hearing a petition filed by a lawyer. The High Court had disposed of his petition in June last year. In his PIL filed in the High Court, the lawyer had requested to direct the Mumbai Cricket Association and the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) to provide drinking water and other facilities to the players during practice or informal matches on public grounds.
The Supreme Court said, ‘Just look at the pictures you have attached. These grounds of Mumbai have produced the greatest cricketers…’ The bench also asked the petitioner whether he is primarily a cricketer or a lawyer? To this the petitioner said, ‘I am a lawyer.’
The bench said, ‘What kind of appeal is this in the PIL? You want toilets to be provided to cricketers in various grounds of Mumbai.’ The Supreme Court said that the High Court’s decision was correct that the PIL was not worth hearing.
