People from which country work the most in Amazon, at what number do Indians come?

Amazon has again started preparations to reduce the number of its employees on a large scale. According to media reports, the company may start a new layoff campaign from January 27, 2026, in which around 16,000 employees may be laid off across the world. This move is part of Amazon’s larger restructuring plan, under which the company is going to eliminate about 30,000 corporate positions by mid-2026. This time its impact can be seen more on Indian teams also.

Indian employees may be most affected by Amazon’s layoff plan. Employees of Amazon Web Services (AWS), Prime Video and other corporate departments are expected to be affected this time. The company had also launched a similar restructuring campaign in late 2025, in which about 14,000 positions were eliminated in the first phase in October 2025.

Which country has the highest number of employees in Amazon?

Amazon has a total of 1.57 million employees worldwide. Most of these employees are from America. After American employees, employees of European countries come second. Indian employees are at third position, but the number of Indian team is continuously increasing. Amazon has approximately 75,000 to 80,000 employees working in India, which includes many technical and corporate roles.

Next steps and impact of restructuring

Amazon aims to eliminate a total of 30,000 corporate jobs by mid-2026. Now the second phase of this scheme is about to start, in which there is a possibility of reduction in 16,000 more posts. This time the layoff is likely to be especially in technical and units like Prime Video, AWS. Even before, Amazon has laid off 27,000 employees in 2022 and 2023 together.

Layoffs focus on white-collar staff

The main focus of Amazon’s new layoffs will be on the white-collar corporate workforce. These include approximately 350,000 employees. The company has already clarified that this step is necessary for restructuring of the business and cutting costs.

Hints for Indian employees

This is a challenging time for Indian employees. The Indian team plays an important role in Amazon’s global operations. There is a need to remain alert for employees in technical roles, support and operational departments. Experts believe that in this time’s retrenchment, the positions of the old and experienced employees may remain safe, but this time will be challenging for the newly joined employees.
