Can Type 1 Diabetes Cause Memory Loss: As type 1 diabetes patients are now living longer than before, its long-term effects are also becoming apparent. A major new research has found that the risk of dementia i.e. memory loss in people suffering from type 1 diabetes can be almost three times higher than that of normal people. This has deepened the question of how this disease affects the brain over time.

What came out in the research?

In this study published in Neurology Journal, data of about 2.8 lakh people was seen. Of these, 5,442 people had type 1 diabetes. Of this group, 144 people later developed dementia, that is, about 2.6 percent of the people. Whereas among people who did not have diabetes, this figure was only 0.6 percent. Even after taking into account factors like age and education, the risk was found to be almost three times higher in people with type 1 diabetes. A similar trend was seen in type 2 diabetes, but the risk there was almost double. However, it is also important to note that this data was taken from the health registry, so in some cases there may be incorrect or incomplete information.

Why is there such a danger?

Now the question is why does this happen in type 1 diabetes? A major reason for this is that this disease often starts at an early age. That means a person lives with this disease for a long time, due to which the risk of other problems increases. Another important reason is the frequent ups and downs in blood sugar. In type 1 diabetes, the sugar level falls and rises very rapidly. Low blood sugar is especially dangerous for the brain, because it puts pressure on brain cells. Not only this, when there is sudden high sugar after low sugar, it can cause more damage to the part of the brain which is associated with memory and learning.

Insulin also plays an important role

Insulin also plays a big role in this. There is an enzyme in the body, which breaks down both insulin and a special protein. This protein is associated with Alzheimer’s. When there is excess insulin in the body, this enzyme first starts breaking down insulin and amyloid beta starts accumulating in the brain. This accumulated protein forms plaque in the brain, which impairs communication between brain cells and gradually memory loss occurs. People with type 1 diabetes have an increased risk of both Alzheimer’s and vascular dementia.
