Young people without diabetes lose weight rapidly, new study on GLP-1 drugs will surprise you

A study conducted in our country on new generation weight loss medicines has revealed that people without diabetes and younger patients lose weight faster. This study has been done for the first time in the country under real conditions, in which the effect of these medicines on people suffering from overweight and obesity has been observed. This research is based on 150 people who were given medicines like semaglutide and tirazeptide through injection for 6 months. Both these medicines are related to GLP-1 therapy, which was first developed for the treatment of type-2 diabetes. But now it is also being used in the treatment of obesity. The results of this study have been published in the Indian Journal of Endocrinology and Metabolism.

How many people lost how much weight?

According to the study, about 41 percent of the participants lost more than 10 percent of their weight. Overall, the average weight loss rate was 8.2 percent. In this study, the difference between people suffering from diabetes and those without diabetes was also clearly visible. People who did not have diabetes, their weight decreased by an average of 11.21 percent, whereas in patients with diabetes, this decrease was about 5.48 percent.

Which medicines were more effective?

It has also been found in this study that the rate of weight loss was higher in patients taking tirazeptide. An average weight loss of 8.60 percent was observed with this medicine. Whereas in those taking semaglutide it was 5.62 percent. Apart from this, rapid weight loss was seen in patients who had never taken GLP-1 therapy before.

The study also showed the effect of age

Research has revealed that the process of weight loss is faster in youth. Especially the goal of weight loss of more than 10 percent was achieved quickly in young and new patients. However, the effect of diabetes has not been seen to have a significant impact on the rate of weight loss below 10 percent. Apart from this, according to the study, it took an average of 9.5 months to lose more than 10 percent weight. Experts say that the full effect of these medicines is usually visible between 12 to 18 months.

The connection between diabetes and obesity

The study has also revealed that it is relatively difficult to lose weight in patients who have obesity along with diabetes. According to experts, problems related to metabolism are more dangerous in Indian patients and insulin resistance is also found more. Apart from this, diabetic patients are often already taking several medicines, which may also include insulin. Due to this, the process of weight loss becomes slow. It is being said that these results have come at a time when the patent of Semaglutide has expired, paving the way for many generic versions in India’s rapidly growing anti-obesity market. Due to which the sale of Hindi medicines has further increased in the country. According to an estimate, about 10.1 crore people in India are suffering from diabetes. 25.4 crore people are suffering from generalized obesity and 35.1 percent people are suffering from abdominal obesity. According to doctors, all this is happening due to changing eating habits and increasing sedentary lifestyle.
