According to the legend, in ancient times a Brahmin named Sumant lived with his daughters Diksha and Sushila. When Sushila became of marriageable age, her mother passed away. Sumant married his daughter Sushila to sage Kaundinya. Sage Kaundinya was taking Sushila to his ashram, but when it became night on the way, he stopped at a place. At that place some women were worshipping the Anant Chaturdashi fast.

Sushila also learned the importance of that fast from the women and she also wore the Anant thread with 14 knots and came to Kaundinya Rishi but Kaundinya Rishi broke that thread and threw it in the fire, this insulted Lord Anant Sutra. After the insult of the Anant form of Shri Hari, all the wealth of Kaundinya Rishi was destroyed and he started living in sorrow.

Then Kaundinya Rishi started wandering in the forest to get that Anant thread. One day he fell on the ground due to hunger and thirst, then Lord Anant appeared. He said that Kaundinya, you have repented your mistake. Now go home and observe the fast of Anant Chaturdashi and keep this fast for 14 years. Due to its effect, your life will become happy and wealth will also be returned. Kaundinya Rishi did the same, after which his wealth and property returned and life became happy.
