Anna Sebastian Perayil Death: Ernst & Young India’s 26-year-old employee Anna Sebastian Perayil died recently. Her mother Anita Augustine wrote an emotional email to EY India’s chairman Rajiv Memani after her daughter’s death. In this, she said that the company’s working methods were responsible for Anna’s death. No one from the company even thought it necessary to come to her daughter’s funeral. Now Rajiv Memani has reacted on this matter. He has said that we are saddened by the death of Anna Sebastian. Also, we regret not being able to attend her funeral.
Rajiv Memani said- such a mistake will never happen again
Rajiv Memani, chairman and MD of MNC Consulting firm, wrote in a LinkedIn post that he is also a father. He is saddened by the death of Ana Sebastian. We apologize that no one went to Ana’s funeral. There is no such tradition in our work culture. This has never happened. I assure you that this will never happen in future. After the email of Ana Sebastian’s mother Anita Augustine became public, the work culture of the company was being criticized all around. Union Labor Minister Shobha Karandlaje has said that an investigation is being conducted by her in this matter.
EY India stands with Ana Sebastian’s family in this hour of grief
Rajiv Memani wrote that for the last few days, a lot is being written on social media about our working methods. I want to tell you that we have always tried to create a healthy work culture. We take full care of our employees. I myself will pay full attention to this priority. We are committed to working for the betterment of our employees. I will not rest until this goal is achieved. The company has issued a statement saying that Ana Sebastian’s death cannot be compensated. We stand with her family in this hour of grief. We have taken her email very seriously.
The mother held the company’s work culture responsible for her daughter’s death
Anita Augustine had written to Rajiv Memani that the company should stop glorifying overwork. In this emotional email, she had written that the company’s human rights value is far from reality. Backbreaking work is considered good in the company. Due to this, her daughter started living under stress. This had a bad effect on her physical, mental and emotional health. She got less sleep. Often she was given work only when the office time was over. Her daughter used to work from home till late night apart from weekends. Ultimately, she died within 4 months of joining. Ana Sebastian had joined EY Pune in March 2024. She died on July 20, 2024.
