Why do Dev celebrate Kartik Purnima (Dev Diwali 2024 on Kartik Purnima)

The reason behind celebrating Dev Diwali on the day of Kartik Purnima is that on this date Lord Shiva had killed Tripurasura, due to which the gods celebrated Diwali by lighting lamps in heaven. According to religious and mythological stories, the demon Tripurasura had ruled over the three worlds with his power and started torturing the gods as well.

Tired of the atrocities of Tripurasura, all the gods reached Shiva. Then Lord Shiva killed Tripurasur on the day of Kartik Purnima and freed the gods from his tyranny. After this, Dev Diwali is celebrated from the day of Kartik Purnima.

Importance of Dev Diwali

There is a belief regarding Dev Diwali that on the day of Kartik Purnima, Gods and Goddesses come to earth and celebrate Diwali at Ganga Ghat. Therefore there is a tradition of lighting lamps on this day. People also donate lamps on this auspicious day. A wonderful sight can be seen in Varanasi on Dev Diwali.
