That leprosy patient was none other than Lord Shiva himself.

Lord Shiva was pleased with the prostitutes and came in his true form and asked them to ask for a boon. Then the prostitutes said that the idol of Maa Durga should be made from the soil of our courtyard. Lord Shiva gave this boon to the prostitutes. After this, the tradition of making idols of Maa Durga from the soil of the banks of Ganga as well as from the courtyards of prostitutes started, which continues till today.
