Kurma Jayanti Mythology
According to the legend, once due to the curse of sage Durvasa, all the gods including Indra became powerless. To get relief from the curse of the sage, all the gods reached Lord Vishnu for help. Vishnuji advised to churn the ocean. Lord Vishnu said that nectar will emerge from the churning of the ocean, drinking which will restore the power of the gods. But due to the curse of the sage, the gods had become weak, due to which the task of churning the ocean was not easy.
Then the gods thought that both the gods and the demons would together churn the ocean. Due to the desire of nectar, even the demons agreed and then the process of churning the ocean started by using Mandrachal mountain as churner and Vasuki serpent in place of rope. 14 valuable things were obtained from the churning of the ocean, but even before the nectar could be released, the mountain started sinking into the ocean.
Then Lord Vishnu took the Kurma incarnation and lifted the weight of Mandrachal mountain on his back. Using God’s back as the base, the ocean was again churned and finally the pot of nectar emerged. According to the legend, in the tortoise incarnation of Lord Vishnu, the diameter of the tortoise’s back was 100,000 yojanas. It was only due to the tortoise incarnation of Lord Vishnu that the process of churning the ocean became possible and the gods regained their power.
