Gautam Buddha’s meaning behind saying Appa Deepo Bhava is that Buddha does not become a Tathagat by seeking knowledge or light. Rather, to become a Tathagat, it is necessary to practice ‘Tatha and Gaat’ i.e. what comes, goes away.

Appa Dipo means become your own lamp. But after becoming Buddha, he not only becomes a lamp but also distributes his own wick with restraint. The love of compassion is created by oneself and the wick of self-consciousness has to be made bright by oneself.

When is there a need for Appa Deepo Bhava? (appo deepo bhava)

You cannot say ‘Aap Deepo Bhava’ before or in the middle to someone who is engaged in the sadhana of something. This is such a valuable word, which should be spoken at the end of the sadhana. Buddha’s philosophy behind being a lamp was that – your spiritual practice has been completed, now you are your own lamp, your own light.
