Noida: To mark 100 years of a historic spiritual moment in Noida, an awe-inspiring evening of devotional kirtan and meditation was held at the Noida Ashram of the Yogoda Satsanga Society of India (YSS), where over thousands of participants participated in a powerful collective experience of peace and inner upliftment.
Echo of 100 years ago comes alive again
This program commemorates a historic evening when Paramahansa Yogananda introduced devotional kirtan to the Western world at Carnegie Hall in New York. The 2,800-seat hall was overflowing, with thousands joining in the kirtan of O God the Beautiful, creating an atmosphere of profound spiritual transformation that continued even after he left the stage.
Inaugurating the programme, Swami Smarananandji (in English) and Swami Adyanandji (in Hindi) presented their views on the profound significance of this century. Swami Smarananandaji emphasized that music filled with self-power is the real universal music, which can be understood by all hearts, thus underscoring the universality of devotional kirtan as a direct path to God.
He further explained that devotional kirtan is not just a musical expression but a scientific spiritual practice. According to the teachings of Yoganandaji, it concentrates the mind, awakens devotion and turns consciousness inward. He said that Kirtan is half the battle won in meditation, as it quickly takes the seeker to a state of deep awareness and inner peace.
Referring to the teachings of Yoganandaji, he explained that devotional kirtan elevates consciousness and awakens devotion, empowers concentration through rhythm and melody, helps relieve anxiety, fear and restlessness, paves the way for deep meditation and inner stillness. Through the power of vibrations it can bring about change at the physical, mental and spiritual levels.
The highlight of the evening was an engrossing devotional kirtan session with the sannyasis, led by Brahmachari Bhaskarananda Ji. Beginning with the sacred kirtan O God Beautiful, the session progressed through a series of cosmic chants in English and Hindi, punctuated by brief meditative pauses.
As soon as many voices were raised together, the atmosphere became filled with the depth of devotion. Many participants experienced inner stillness, emotional liberation, and spiritual upliftment—an echo of the original event in 1926, when attendees experienced God-enlightenment and healing of body, mind, and spirit.
Swami Smarananandji also told that devotional kirtan is an art, which requires devotion, emotion and internal absorption. True kirtan, he said, goes beyond words and sounds and connects the seeker with the divine. The program concluded with a brief address by Swami Adyananda Ji, who inspired attendees to further study the teachings of the YSS, including the path of Rajayoga, which coordinates devotion, meditation, and a balanced life.
Presence of dignitaries from various fields enhanced the dignity of the program
it Noida The gathering was part of a global centenary celebration, with a parallel event held on the same day at Carnegie Hall in the United States that connects hearts around the world through the universal language of devotion. As the evening came to an end, a message resonated within everyone that when music is filled with devotion, it is no longer just a sound, it becomes a medium of divine experience.
