Not everyone can keep the fast of Sawan? Know for whom there are different rules

Sawan 2026: The month of Sawan is considered special for devotion to Lord Shiva. During this period, devotees worship Shiva and fast on Mondays. According to the calendar tradition of North India, Saavan will start from 30th July 2026 and the first Saavan will fall on Monday, 3rd August. After this, there will be Sawan Mondays on 10th, 17th and 24th August.

The fast of Sawan Monday is observed with devotion and determination, but it is not necessary or appropriate for every person to fast without food and water for a long time. Especially pregnant women, small children, elderly people and people suffering from any disease or taking regular medicines should decide the method of fasting according to their health.

What are the rules for pregnant women?

During pregnancy, the body needs adequate nutrition and water. Therefore, it is not considered appropriate to observe a hard or waterless fast without medical advice. Women having religious faith can worship Shiva with fruits or satvik food as per their capacity.

Caution is necessary for sick and weak people

If a person has weakness, dehydration or any disease, then rigorous fasting can increase the problem. For such people, taking care of health is more important than fasting. Last year also, based on the advice of health experts, sick and weak people were asked to take precautions.

What should people with diabetes and other diseases do?

People suffering from diabetes, heart, kidney or other serious diseases should not fast without doctor’s advice. Especially for people who take regular medicines, not eating for a long time can cause problems. Medical advice is considered necessary while planning fasting in diabetes.

Provide light fruit diet to small children

The body of small children is still in the stage of development. Therefore, it is not appropriate to make them observe waterless or rigorous fast for a long time. If children wish, they can take part in the worship of Lord Shiva by taking fruits, milk or other nutritious Satvik food.

Caution is important for the elderly also

With increasing age, the needs of the body and the intake of medicines may differ. Therefore, elderly people should observe fast according to their health condition. In case of weakness, dizziness or any other problem, it is better to give priority to health instead of continuing the fast.

Can’t you worship Shiva if you can’t keep fast?

This is not necessary. Keeping fast is not the only way to worship Lord Shiva. Those who cannot fast can offer water to the Shivalinga, chant ‘Om Namah Shivay’, recite Shiva Chalisa or perform puja as per their devotion.

What to do on Sawan Monday?

On Monday of Sawan, take bath in the morning and meditate on Lord Shiva. After this, there is a tradition of offering water to Shivalinga and offering bel leaves and flowers. According to devotion, the mantra ‘Om Namah Shivay’ can be chanted. The tradition of Jalabhishek, puja and fasting is especially popular on Sawan Monday.

What do religious beliefs say?

According to religious beliefs, the fast should be observed according to one’s capacity and devotion. If a person’s health does not permit, then it should not be considered necessary to observe a strict fast just to follow the tradition. Lord Shiva can be worshiped with devotion even without strict fasting.
