Onam 2024: In India, the festival of Onam is famous for the harvest of new crops in the fields. This festival is celebrated with great pomp in South India. Especially the people of Kerala celebrate this festival for ten days. This year Onam will start from 6 September and will be celebrated till 15 September. In this festival, people decorate their home courtyard with flowers and rangoli.

This festival is associated with a mythological belief. Whenever sin and injustice increases in the world, it is believed that Lord Vishnu takes incarnation to eradicate sin. That is why Lord Vishnu took the form of Vaman to stop the increasing powers of the demon king Mahabali.

Vishnu Ji took the Vamana avatar to redeem the world and to end the rule of Asuraraj Mahabali. Taking advantage of his being a dwarf, Vamana asked Asuraraj Mahabali for three feet of land in donation, which included the earth, the universe and Bali’s head in the third step.

Mahabali did not go back on his word and gave all three gifts to Vamana as a boon. Seeing Mahabali’s generosity, Lord Vishnu gave Bali the boon of coming to earth from the netherworld once a year. That is why it is believed that every year Bali comes to meet his people on the day of Onam.

On this day, people install the idols of Lord Vishnu’s Vamana avatar and Mahabali in the courtyard of their house and worship Lord Vishnu. After the worship on the tenth day, the idols are immersed.

This festival is also very famous for its delicious dishes like Kalan, Olan, Pachadi, Toran, Sambar, Aviyal, Parippu Curry and Injipulli. Many entertaining programs like Kathakali dance, Pulikali dance and singing are also organized on this day to celebrate the festival. Onam is celebrated as a traditional festival.

Onam festival is celebrated for ten days. Many types of rituals are performed during these ten days. The first day of Onam is called Atham. On this day, houses and temples are decorated with colorful flowers. During this time, many types of games are also played, among which boat race, Vallam Kali and snake boat race are mainly liked.
