Rongali Bihu 2026: As soon as the Assam Assembly elections are over, the atmosphere of the state has completely changed. Whereas till a few days ago there was a period of political activities and election excitement, now the whole of Assam is immersed in the preparations for the festival of Rongali Bihu. It is the biggest and important festival of the state, which is celebrated with full enthusiasm and traditional customs. Let us tell you that the festival of Rongali Bihu is being celebrated today on 14th April 2026.
Rongali Bihu, also known as Bohag Bihu, celebrated in mid-April, marks the Assamese New Year and the arrival of spring. This festival is deeply linked to the agricultural traditions of Assam and conveys the message of new harvest, prosperity and new beginnings. After the elections are over this year, people have got the opportunity to celebrate the festival with full heart.
Traditional dishes being prepared in every home
Preparations for Bihu are going on in full swing across Assam including Jorhat, from villages to cities. Traditional dishes like pitha, laru, chira, curd and akhoi are being prepared in every home. The entire atmosphere is filled with the fragrance of these dishes. These are not just food items, but are an important part of Assamese culture and tradition, which reflect mutual love and unity.
The tradition of threshing rice with “Dheki” (traditional wooden instrument) is still alive in rural areas. The sound of Dheki echoes in the villages, which is a symbol of people staying connected to their roots. On the other hand, the cultural environment has also become completely alive. The melodious sound of Dhol, Pepa and Gogona is being heard all around. Young men and women are practicing Bihu dance and songs. Preparations are underway for cultural programs at various places where traditional Bihu dance and music will be presented.
While there was laziness in the markets during the elections, now the markets have returned to the market. Especially there has been a rise in the sale of traditional clothes like Mekhala Chadar and Gamchha. Due to the tradition of gifting new clothes and towels on the occasion of Bihu, their demand has increased.
Benefit to local artisans and industry
Abhishek Karnani, a textile trader from Jorhat, said that there has been a lot of improvement in the market after the elections. He said that people were very busy during the elections, due to which the sales were affected, but now due to Bihu, the sales of traditional clothes are increasing rapidly.
Similarly, Amarjyoti Bora, who sells traditional food items, also said that sales have improved in the last few days. He said that they sell Chira, Muri, Akhoi and different types of rice. Despite the rain in recent times, people are coming to the market for Bihu shopping, due to which good growth is being seen in business.
This time after the elections is proving to be very important economically for local traders, artisans and small vendors. Especially people associated with the handloom industry are earning more profits at this time, because the demand for traditional clothes has increased.
Rongali Bihu is not just a festival but a symbol of the cultural identity and unity of Assam. It connects people of all classes, communities and age groups together. There is an atmosphere of happiness and enthusiasm in families and communities.
Thus, Assam has gone from being an election atmosphere to a festive atmosphere. This change reflects the cultural richness of the state and the vibrant enthusiasm of the people. Assam is now ready to welcome Rangali Bihu with full enthusiasm and gaiety.
