Pradyumna Chaturthi fasting story
King Dashrath said to sage Vashishtha, O sage, please describe the fast of Jyeshtha Shukla Chaturthi.
Vashishtha Muni said, O king, there lived a very talented king in a city called Sheshpur in Andhra Pradesh, whose name was Kardam. That king was knowledgeable about various weapons. Once upon a time in ancient times, King Kardam suffered from a terrible disease called gonorrhea. Gonorrhea is also called gonorrhea. Due to this disease, the king’s body began to burn intensely like fire.
Gonorrhea left the king in such a condition that he became unable even to urinate. His entire body was burning terribly and he was crying in agony due to the pain. Despite various types of treatments by various skilled physicians, there was no relief from the king’s disease.
As the pain of the disease increased, the king abandoned his kingdom and went to the forest with his wife. While wandering in the forest full of predatory animals like lion, tiger etc., the king started thinking that death is better than this pain.
The king was wandering in the forest meditating in this way when at that very moment Rishi Bhardwaj, the best among the sages, arrived there. At the same time, due to pain in the urinary tract, the king fell on the ground and started mourning. Seeing this plight of the king, the great sage Bhardwaj ji, with his power of penance, found out the reason for the king’s sorrow and said, O Rajendra Kardam, listen to my beneficial words. Your kingdom has become inferior due to Chaturthi fast, due to which you have become full of great sins. Therefore, you along with the entire people observe Chaturthi fast with devotion. Due to the virtuous results of that fast, you will definitely become free from sorrow.
The king learned the rules and regulations of Chaturthi fast. Sage Bhardwaj said that Chaturthi of Krishna Paksha is called Sankashta and Chaturthi of Shukla Paksha is considered to provide religion, wealth, work and salvation. By observing this fast at the beginning of all fasts, a person will attain all four purushaarthas, otherwise he will be inferior to them and will suffer hell.
Saying this, Rishivar described the greatness arising from Jyeshtha Chaturthi fast, hearing which the king became happy. The king, while paying obeisance to Rishivar, expressed his curiosity to know the form of Lord Ganesha. Then Rishi Bhardwaj said, O king, even the Vedas etc. are unable to describe the form of Lord Ganesha, and I describe the essence which provides happiness.
In ancient times, I meditated and performed severe penance due to which the entire living world came under my control. After that I got insight. After that, I calmed and suppressed the senses and settled on the Aughad path. After that I attained peace by becoming a swanand dweller. From that peace, divisions arose, due to which I again became peaceless and sad.
At the same time Maharishi Raivat appeared there. After saluting and worshiping Raivat Muni, I offered him a seat and requested him to say, O Mahamune, you are also the guru of Yogindras, my life became blessed by your darshan. Oh God! Grant me the knowledge of Yogashanti, through which I can become at peace.
Raivat Muni said that the letter Gakar in the word Ganesh is self-sensitive, that is, capable of being known by one’s own soul and Nakar is called the yoga of the soul. The lord of both of them is Lord Ganesha, who is said to be the husband of Brahma. So, O Honorable One! You meditate on Lord Ganesha, only then you will attain peace, otherwise you will remain confused for a hundred years. Oh great man! In earlier times, I got peace by listening to this great knowledge from the mouth of Lord Vishnu and now I am practicing Ganapatya Dharma.
Saying this, Rishi Raivat gave me the one-syllable mantra of Lord Shri Ganesha that gives success and also described its method and trust. After reciting the mantra, I worshiped him and after accepting the worship, he disappeared. After that I started worshiping Lord Ganesha with full devotion. By the grace of Lord Ganesha, I attained peace, yet I remained absorbed in his meditation. After performing Aharnish Bhajan continuously for ten years, Vighneshwar Lord Ganesha appeared in front of me.
After seeing Lord Ganesha, I worshiped him and saluted him with his hymn containing the eight names of Samveda. After that, after making me Ganapati, he went to Swanandlok and I started being absorbed in his devotion daily. Saying this, sage Bhardwaj formally gave the Ashtakshar Mahamanu Mantra to King Kardam and disappeared from there.
King Kardam went to his residence and happily worshiped Lord Ganesha. First of all, Chaturthi Tithi of Shuklapaksha came in Jyeshtha month. On the day of Chaturthi, the king along with the citizens observed the fast. O King Dasharatha, King Kardam has declared that the Chaturthi of Shukla Paksha is going to provide boons and the Chaturthi of Krishna Paksha is going to remove troubles, hence any person who does not observe fast on these dates will be expelled from the kingdom and will face punishment. People all over the world started observing this fast.
Due to fasting himself and getting it done by his subjects, the king’s gonorrhea disease subsided and his pain ended completely. Impressed by the glory of Lord Ganesha, the king handed over his kingdom to his son and he himself along with his wife started living in a garden and worshiping Lord Ganesha. At last, while singing the praises of Lord Ganesha, he became absorbed in Brahma. After that, when the end came, all the people of the kingdom got absorbed in Brahma.
Rishi Vashishtha said, O Rajendra Dasharatha, now listen to another success story related to this fast. A very sinful Antyaja lived in the country of Gaud. He was greedy for wealth, a womanizer and a misdemeanor. He used to kill people traveling in the forest and loot their money etc. Not only this, seeing a woman of any caste alone in the forest, he used to rape her forcefully.
He used to commit various types of sins daily. Once that sinner attacked a Brahmin. Frightened, the Brahmin started running away, calling people loudly for help. Hearing the call of that Brahmin, five men came there. Those five attacked that sinful Antyaj with weapons and made him helpless.
That day was the Chaturthi date of Shuklapaksha of Jyeshtha month. Due to the pain of the weapon attack, he remained completely fasting on the day of Chaturthi and could not consume food, water etc. Therefore, he completed the Chaturthi fast in his ignorance. Due to the pain of stroke and fasting, that sinner died on the fifth day. Due to the virtue of observing Chaturthi fast in ignorance, that evil unrighteous Antyaj also became Brahmabhoot.
O king! When an unrighteous Chandal can become Brahmabhuta due to the effect of observing a fast while being ignorant, then whoever observes this fast with devotion will definitely become Brahma himself by getting absorbed in Brahma. There are many such examples that due to the influence of this fast, many sinful people became happy after enjoying the worldly pleasures. It is impossible to even describe them. The glory of this fast is immense, that is why its greatness has been described. A person who recites and listens to the greatness of Jyeshtha Shukla Chaturthi fast gets the desired results.
