What is Dandi Bada? (Mahakumbh Dandi Bada)

The monk who holds a stick in his hand which is called Brahma Danda is called Dandi Sanyasi. The organization of Dandi Sanyasis is known as Dandi Bada. “Dand Sanyasa” is not a sect but an Ashram tradition. Lord Narayana had adopted Danda as the first Dandi Sanyasi.

Dandi Sanyasi in the scriptures

To protect the religion, Shankaracharya, apart from the Akharas, established Dashnam Sannyas, of which three (Ashram, Tirtha, Saraswati) were Dandi Sanyasi.

• The main monastery of the ashram is Sharda Math, its deity is Siddheshwar and goddess Bhadrakali.
• Tirtha Dashna Sanyasi follows all the conduct of the Ashram only.
• The third name is Saraswati, who are followers of Shringeri Math.

Considered as incarnation of Narayan

Dandi Swami himself is an incarnation of Narayan. It is believed that just by having the darshan of Dandi Swami one can get the darshan and blessings of Lord Narayana. They say. If service and darshan of Dandi Swami is not done during Kumbh, then Kumbh bath, chanting and penance is considered incomplete.

What kind of monks are there in Dandi Bada

Dandi Sanyasi can only be a Brahmin. He was also allowed to be punished only in the absence of his parents and wife. Dandi Swamis have a different world, they remain engaged in their sadhana through rigorous routine and penance. Neither does Dandi Swami prepare food himself, nor does he go to anyone’s place to eat without invitation. Only when a Brahmin or a saint invites us to eat, we go to eat. These are blessed by Goddess Lakshmi.
