History of Mahakumbh Mela (MahaKumbh History)

Organizing Mahakumbh is an ancient tradition, which has been going on since the Vedic period. The main meaning behind this is to take bath in holy rivers, which according to belief destroys the sins of man and helps in attaining salvation.

When the gods became powerless due to the curse of sage Durvasa and the demon king Bali had control over all the three worlds, then the gods went to Lord Vishnu and prayed and told him about their disaster.

The story of the beginning of the Kumbh Mela is linked to the story of the churning of the ocean in mythology. Lord Vishnu asked Dev to churn the ocean. According to the story, when the gods and demons churned the ocean to obtain nectar, from that churning came out a ghat (kalash) of nectar. Kumbh also means Kalash. To get the nectar, a war broke out between the gods and the demons, due to which Lord Vishnu entrusted the task of protecting the pot of nectar to his vehicle Garuda.

When Garuda was flying with the nectar, some drops of nectar fell at four places – Prayagraj, Haridwar, Ujjain, Nashik. Since then, Kumbh Mela is organized at these places every 12 years. During this time, people atone for their sins by taking a dip of faith in the Ganga. It is believed that there was a 12-day war between the gods and the demons, which is considered equal to 12 years in human years. Therefore, Kumbh is organized every 12 years.
