Karwa Chauth 2024: Married women will observe Karva Chauth fast on 20 October 2024 for the long life of their husbands. This fast is a symbol of unbroken good fortune. Due to its glory, the married couple gets the blessing of long life.
This is the reason why during Karva Chauth fast, women observe Nirjala fast and worship Goddess Karva and Lord Ganesha with full rituals. Then she takes food and water only after offering water to the moon at night. Let us know whose story should be recited on the day of Karva Chauth for the longevity of the husband.
1- Karwa Chauth fast story (Karwa Chauth Katha)
According to the legend, Karva Devi lived with her husband in a village near the Tungabhadra River. Once when Karva’s husband went to the river to take a bath, the crocodile caught hold of his leg and pulled him inside. Seeing death approaching, Karwa’s husband started calling Karwa.
As soon as Karva heard her husband’s scream, she reached near the river. Seeing her husband on the verge of death, Karva tied the crocodile to a tree with a raw thread. The crocodile was unable to move. The lives of both Karva’s husband and the crocodile were in danger. Then Karva called Yamraj and asked him to give life to her husband and give death penalty to the crocodile.
Yamraj told Karwa that he cannot do this because the time of her husband’s death has passed and the life of the crocodile is left. Hearing such words of Yama Dev, Karwa got angry and warned Yamraj to curse him.
Karva’s devotees were happy to give it to religion. He saved the life of Karva’s husband and gave him life while the crocodile died. It is believed that this incident happened on the Chaturthi date of Krishna Paksha of Kartik month. This is the reason why these married women keep a fast and worship Shiva family and Karva Mata for the long life of their husbands. O Karva Mata, just as you brought back your husband from the jaws of death, protect my husband also.
2- Karva Chauth fast story (story of moneylender)
A moneylender lived with his wife Lilavati in a city of Indraprasthapur. From whom he had seven sons and a virtuous daughter named Veeravati. Once, on the Chaturthi date of Krishna Paksha of Kartik month, Sethani along with her seven daughters-in-law and her daughter also observed the fast of Karva Chauth. At night, when all the moneylender’s sons sat down to eat, he asked his sister to have food as well. On this the sister said- Brother, the moon has not risen yet. I will eat food today only after offering Arghya to the moon when it rises.
The moneylender’s son loved his sister very much, he was very sad to see his sister’s face distraught with hunger. The moneylender’s sons went outside the city and climbed a tree and lit a fire there. After coming back home he said to his sister – Look sister, the moon has come out. Now you offer Arghya to them and eat food.
The moneylender’s daughter said to her sisters-in-law – Look, the moon has come out, you all should also offer Arghya and have food. Hearing the words of sister-in-law, the sisters-in-law said – Sister, the moon has not risen yet, your brothers are deceitfully lighting a fire and showing its light to you in the form of the moon.
The moneylender’s daughter, ignoring the advice of her sisters-in-law, offered water to the moon shown by her brothers and had her meal. When Veeravati started eating food, she started getting inauspicious signs. In the first mouthful he got hair, in the second he sneezed and in the third mouthful he got an invitation from his in-laws. After reaching her in-laws’ house for the first time, she found her husband’s dead body.
Seeing her husband dead, Veeravati started mourning, blaming herself for some mistake she had made during the Karva Chauth fast. Hearing her lamentation, Goddess Indrani, the wife of Lord Indra, came to console Veeravati. Goddess Indrani advised Veeravati to observe the fast of Karva Chauth as well as the Chauth of every month throughout the year and assured her that by doing so her husband would return alive.
After this, Veeravati performed all the religious rituals and monthly fasts with full faith. In the end, due to the virtue gained from all those fasts, Veeravati got her husband back.
