UP Nikay Election Results 2023: Consecutive defeats in assembly, Lok Sabha and by-elections do not bode well for the future of the Samajwadi Party, the main opposition party in the state. The Samajwadi Party (SP), led by SP supremo Akhilesh Yadav, on Saturday failed to win even a single out of 17 mayoral seats and also failed to retain the Swar assembly seat. At the same time, SP failed to win Chanbe seat from Apna Dal (S). In 2017, when SP chief Akhilesh Yadav took over the reins of power in a coup from his father late Mulayam Singh Yadav, the SP was also defeated.
Cooperation of other parties did not work
The Samajwadi Party was badly defeated in the 2017 assembly elections and was barely left with 47 seats. The SP had contested the assembly elections in alliance with the Congress and both the parties had to face defeat. In the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, Akhilesh Yadav joined hands with the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP). It was a decision that was rejected by senior party leaders. SP did not get any benefit from the alliance in that election. However, BSP benefited in this election and won 10 Lok Sabha seats. Soon after this election, the alliance was also broken. In subsequent months, the SP also lost its Azamgarh and Rampur seats to the BJP in the bypolls.
After this, in the year 2022, SP formed an alliance with smaller parties including Rashtriya Lok Dal (RLD), but this also did not work. Akhilesh Yadav mended relations with his uncle Shivpal Yadav ahead of the 2023 civic elections, but the effort proved too late and too little. Only SP workers are now questioning the leadership of Akhilesh Yadav.
