Delhi News: Authorities on Friday demolished a slum in Vasant Vihar following an order by the Delhi High Court. Police gave this information. A senior police officer told that this campaign to demolish the slum was organized in ‘Priyanka Gandhi Camp’. The camp was reportedly in existence for almost three decades.
He told, “The team of NDRF (National Disaster Response Force) got it done with the help of MCD (Municipal Corporation of Delhi). The operation was completed by this afternoon.” National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) officials said that they are following the court order and working as per due process.
High Court refuses to stay the demolition
The Delhi High Court refused to stay the demolition of a slum built on the site allotted to the force for construction of the NDRF headquarters and also directed that the slum be demolished on June 15 instead of June 2 . Justice Tushar Rao Gedela, hearing a petition by the residents of Priyanka Gandhi Camp, asked the Delhi Urban Shelter Improvement Board (DUSIB) to consider the petitioners’ plea that they be shifted to a temporary shelter in the meantime. Meanwhile, the Municipal Corporation of Delhi said in a statement that it launched an “anti-encroachment drive” near Mata Gujri Devi (MGD) Hospital in west Delhi.
Significantly, NDRF had put up notices outside the houses of the people living there to vacate these slums, after which NDRF and MCD took action.
