Kanker News: Lightning wreaks havoc in Kanker, 3 dead including the village sub-sarpanch hiding under a tree.

With the arrival of monsoon, the weather is proving fatal. On Friday (June 12), a major and painful accident occurred due to lightning in Kalgaon village located in Antagarh block of Kanker district. Suddenly lightning fell on the MNREGA workers who were taking shelter under a tree to save themselves from the rain. In this incident, three people including the Deputy Sarpanch of the village died on the spot, while 5 other women were seriously injured.

Identification of the deceased: Those who lost their lives include Kalgaon Deputy Sarpanch Manraj Patel, villagers Santosh Patel and Prakash Patel. According to Antagarh Police Station, 5 women have been injured in the accident. In view of the critical condition of one of them, he has been referred to Kanker for better treatment, while the other 4 are being treated at the Community Health Center of Antagarh.

How did the accident happen?

Pond deepening work was going on in the village under the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MNREGA), where about 50 to 60 laborers were gathered.

Villagers told that the work was going on normally, when suddenly the weather became stormy and it started raining heavily. To protect themselves from the rain, some workers had taken shelter under a big tree nearby. After a few seconds, a very powerful lightning fell on that tree. Lightning fell directly on 8 people, due to which three laborers died on the spot.

There is mourning in the village, administration alert

There is an atmosphere of mourning in the entire village due to this sudden incident. The police have taken the bodies of the three deceased into their custody and sent them for post-mortem. At present, the focus of the administration is on providing immediate assistance to the affected families and providing proper medical treatment to the injured. After this tragic incident, safety protocols at MNREGA work sites are also expected to be reviewed.
