According to a Reuters report, a scammer in northern China convinced a person to transfer money to his account using deepfake technology. In fact, the scammer used AI-powered face-swapping technology and impersonated a close friend of the victim. The victim could not even identify that he was not his close friend. The fraudster had assumed the form of the victim’s friend during the video call. Then asked him to transfer 4.3 million yuan (about Rs 5 crore). The victim felt that his friend was in dire need of money, so he transferred the money. The incident has raised concerns in China about the use of AI to commit financial crimes.
