City of Maya Civilization discovered in Mexico : A massive 1,500-year-old Mayan city has been discovered on Mexico’s Yucatan Peninsula. This old city of Maya civilization has been discovered through a special type of laser survey (Lidar technology).

According to the report of Live Science, the journal Antiquity has published this new discovery on Tuesday. According to research, 6,674 structures have been found in the huge city that was discovered. Which also includes pyramids like Chichen Itza and Tikal.

Lidar maps used for search

The researchers of this research used lidar maps, which are created by shooting laser pulses on the ground, for their discovery at the 1,500-year-old site. This technology was not accessible to early career scientists – Luke Auld-Thomas

Luke Auld-Thomas, an archaeologist at the University of Arizona and first author of the study, said this technology was not accessible to early-career scientists. Having a Lidar survey of this area beforehand was very helpful.

Traces of Maya city found in fields and highways

Thomas explored previously commissioned LiDAR surveys designed to measure and monitor carbon in Mexico’s forests. He then pointed to a 50-square-mile area in east-central Campeche, Mexico, where Maya structures had never before been discovered.
