UK PM Diwali Reception: The offering of non-veg and liquor during the Diwali welcome ceremony organized at 10 Downing Street, the residence of the Prime Minister in London, has created deep resentment in the British Hindu community. This ceremony was organized by British Prime Minister Keir Starmer on 29 October. Many Hindu organizations have expressed dissatisfaction regarding the non-veg and liquor served in this program.
Community organization Insight UK called it insensitive to religious sentiments and called the Prime Minister’s choice of such a menu on the auspicious occasion of Diwali a “lack of understanding.” Insight UK wrote in its social media post that Diwali is not just a festival, but it is a “deeply spiritual event” for the Hindu community. He raised the question whether discussions were held with Hindu community organizations and religious leaders before organizing the event so that such insensitivity could be avoided.
Appeal for more attention in future
Insight UK urges that in future, greater sensitivity should be exercised towards such events which are organized to promote multiculturalism and inclusivity, but ignore the religious and cultural traditions of the communities concerned. This reception was organized after the Labor Party’s victory in the general elections held in July.
PM office did not give any clarification on the menu
Leaders of the British Indian community, parliamentarians and professionals participated in the occasion. Prime Minister Keir Starmer marked the beginning of Diwali by lighting lamps at the door of 10 Downing Street, a tradition started by his predecessor and Britain’s first Hindu Prime Minister, Rishi Sunak. Downing Street has not yet commented on the menu of this event.
