Canada to end LMIA Point : Canada is about to end a special privilege granted to immigrant candidates who apply for permanent residence in Canada with a Labor Market Impact Assessment (LMIA) supported job offer. The Canadian Ministry of Immigration has announced that the Express Entry Points system for awarding points for LMIA-supported job offers will soon be phased out.
What is the purpose behind this step of Canada?,
Canada has taken this step with the aim of preventing incidents of fraud related to job offers. Canada’s move will affect candidates seeking to strengthen their permanent residence applications using an LMIA-supported job offer.
What is LMIA?
The LMIA system in Canada was introduced in 2014 as part of reforms in the Temporary Foreign Worker (TFW) program. The then-Stephen Harper administration saw it as “a last and limited measure for Canada, to be applied only when qualified Canadian workers are not available and there is a severe labor crisis in the country.”
According to the Financial Post, 71,300 LMIAs have been approved in Canada in the first quarter of this year, compared to 63,300 in the same period last year.
What did the Immigration Minister announce?,
Immigration Minister Mark Miller revealed during a press conference in Ottawa that applicants who have an LMIA-backed job offer will no longer receive additional ranking points. Recently, Miller said on a TV show, “We are implementing some additional measures that will strengthen the integrity of this program and reduce LMIA fraud.”
However, the date of implementation has not been announced yet by the Canadian government.
Indians will be affected the most
According to The Times of India, India remains the largest country to receive invitations to apply for permanent residence under the Express Entry system. It is noteworthy that last year about 52,100 Indians (47 percent of the total invitations) were invited to become permanent residents. But after the implementation of this new rule, its biggest impact will be on Indians dreaming of permanent residence in Canada.
