A statement by Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney has increased the risk of trade war between America and Canada. In fact, the Canadian Prime Minister said last Thursday that Canada is rapidly negotiating with the United States to reach a comprehensive trade agreement, but if US President Donald Trump’s threat to impose a 50 percent tariff on Canadian goods comes into force, he is also ready to respond.

Know that the new tariffs that Trump announced on Canada last Monday are going to be implemented from August 19. “If these tariffs or other measures are implemented, there are a number of steps we can take,” Mark Carney said after a meeting with Canada’s premier and regional leaders in Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island.

Mark Carney said, “We do not need to respond in advance. I feel that responding in advance at this stage would be counterproductive.”

Which products are included in the tariff changes?

It is noteworthy that America’s new tariff includes many types of goods, including honey, cement, liquor, dairy products, some wood products, hockey sticks and other things. However, these do not include energy products, fish, critical minerals and potash. But these will include those products which were earlier exempted from import taxes under the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement. America did not renew that trade deal of 2020. For this reason a new round of talks started.

How much loss could Canada suffer from tariffs?

According to an analysis by Desjardins, one of Canada’s largest financial institutions, these tariffs will have an impact on Canada’s annual exports to the US. This could result in a loss of about $19.8 billion. This is approximately 5% of the US imports from Canada every year. Other than this, America has given a tariff blow to 60 countries. 10% additional tax has also been imposed on India.
