Australia has passed a law banning social media for children under 16 years of age. This step has been taken amid growing concerns in the country about the impact of social media on the mental health of children. Under this law, tech companies like Meta (Instagram, Facebook), TikTok will have to block children’s accounts on their platforms, otherwise they will have to face a fine of up to 49.5 million Australian dollars. This ban will be fully implemented in the next one year.

This new law has been supported under the leadership of Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, who may get a chance to improve his image among the public in the upcoming elections. However, those opposing it include privacy rights advocates and child rights groups, who consider it a violation of children’s rights. Despite this, 77% of Australian citizens have supported this law in recent opinion polls.
