China Nuclear Power: China’s nuclear weapons are increasing rapidly, and according to a new report by the US Defense Intelligence Agency, this number may exceed one thousand in the next six years. The report says that China is expanding nuclear capabilities keeping in mind its strategic and security interests. This includes sophisticated systems such as missile silos, ground mobiles, submarine-launched weapons and nuclear-capable hypersonic glide vehicles (HGVs).
According to The Week report, China’s nuclear arsenal may double by 2030, which may increase the possibility of instability in the global security situation. China currently has more than 500 operational nuclear weapons, and the report also indicated that most of these weapons would be capable of hitting the continental United States.
China’s place in nuclear power
According to the report of Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI), a Swedish think tank, by January 2024, China had 500 nuclear warheads, while in 2023 the number was 410. As of January this year, there are a total of 12,221 nuclear warheads in the world, of which 9,585 have been kept safe for potential use. Russia and America have more than 90% of the world’s nuclear weapons, followed by China in third place.
Situation in other countries
After Russia and the US, China’s nuclear stockpile is increasing rapidly, while Britain, France, India, Pakistan, North Korea and Israel are also modernizing their arsenals. Although China’s nuclear weapons stockpile is still far less than that of Russia and the United States, this rapidly growing capability holds the potential for a change in the global security balance.
