‘Death plane’ found after 74 years in 2000 feet depth of sea, the accident changed the rules of air travel

A passenger plane that sank in the Atlantic Ocean about 74 years ago has finally been found. The wreckage of the ‘Clipper Endeavor’ plane of America’s famous airline Pan American Airways has been discovered at a depth of about 2,000 feet of the sea. This is the same plane, whose accident not only took the lives of 52 people, but also changed the safety rules of air travel all over the world forever.

The accident happened a few minutes after take off

On April 11, 1952, a Douglas DC-4 aircraft took off from Puerto Rico for New York. There were 64 passengers and five crew members on board the plane. A few minutes after takeoff, both engines on the right side of the plane stopped. The pilot was forced to make an emergency landing in the sea.

Although all the passengers survived the initial collision, the plane started sinking very rapidly. Amidst the chaos, only 12 passengers and five crew members could be saved, while 52 people died.

How was the debris found after 74 years?

The joint campaign was conducted by Air/Sea Heritage Foundation, Deep Sea Vision and the team of Discovery Channel’s popular show ‘Expedition Unknown’. The team searched in the depths of the ocean with the help of high-resolution sonar technology and autonomous underwater drones. During the search operation on June 2, the wreckage of the plane was seen on the sea floor.

Pan American’s famous winged logo and the aircraft’s name ‘Clipper Endeavor’ could be clearly read in photographs taken later. This confirmed that this was the same plane which was being searched for decades.

‘This discovery thrills us and also makes us emotional’

“We are all shocked and extremely excited by this discovery, but also humbled by what happened at that site so many years ago,” said Russell Matthews, president of the Air/Sea Heritage Foundation.

Josh Gates, host of ‘Expedition Unknown’, said, “It kept scanning the ocean floor for about 30 hours. When the system came back to the surface, it was still there.”

He added, “Whenever you board an airplane today, your journey is safer than ever because of what happened to the Clipper Endeavor and its passengers three-quarters of a century ago.”

This accident changed the safety rules of the whole world

Investigation revealed that at the time of the accident, no safety information was given to the passengers regarding life jackets, life rafts and emergency exits. Language problems and the lack of a coordinated evacuation process made the situation worse. The plane sank into the sea in less than three minutes.

After this accident, safety briefing, demonstration of use of life jacket and information about emergency exits to be given to passengers before flights became mandatory all over the world. Today, the safety demo shown in every aircraft before takeoff started after this tragedy.

Debris will not be removed, a memorial will be built

The search team has clarified that there are no plans to take the plane debris out of the sea. The place where it was found is believed to be the final resting place of those 52 people.

The Air/Sea Heritage Foundation is now working with the Government of Puerto Rico to preserve the site and build a memorial to those who lost their lives in the crash. Information about this discovery has also been conveyed to the families affected by the accident and to the two people who are alive today.
