Difficulty increased for Indians, work permit rules are changing in Canada; what will be the effect

Work Permit in Canada: There is going to be a change in the work permit rules of Canada soon, which can have a deep impact on Indians. Canada has made several major changes in its Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP) rules, which will come into effect from November 1.

These rules state that a minimum Canadian Language Benchmark (CLB) score of 7 is now mandatory, and results of tests such as CELPIP, IELTS and PTE CORE will be accepted.

Priority will be given to people in sectors where Canada has a long-term workforce shortage, such as farming, agri-food, health, science, technology, engineering, mathematics (STEM), business And transportation. A new set of rules is being added to the existing rules. Candidates must complete their education in recognized eligible post-graduation institutions for Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP). The new rules are part of the Canadian government’s strategy to reduce the number of foreign students by 10 per cent.

Apart from English, you will have to learn these languages

It is believed that according to the new rules, not only English but also French language will be mandatory for getting a job in Canada. The Government of Canada is preparing its own standards to check language proficiency. To get the job, the candidate will have to prove his ability to read, write, listen and speak these languages.

What will be the impact of the new rules on Indian students?

Canada is one of the favorite destinations for Indian students where Indian students can be seen in majority in both colleges and universities. According to the 2022 report of the Canadian Bureau for International Education (CBIE), 319,130 Indian students were recorded in Canada. From January to June 2024, this figure is 1 lakh. The number of people and students working in Canada was 4,000 in 2019. Increase from 37,000 to 1.2 million by 2023.

Difficulties will increase for Indians

Due to its favorable immigration policy, Canada has been seen as an alternative to America for many Indians. However, Indians are likely to get a big shock due to the recent changes. Over the last decade or so, Canada has emerged as one of the most sought-after destinations for Indian immigrants, with many choosing to apply for a temporary work permit to obtain Permanent Residency (PR). The new restrictions, once imposed, will slow down the ambitions of Indian people and make it much more difficult for Indian students to achieve PR.

case study

Arvind Meena became a (PR) permanent resident of Canada about one and a half years ago. After studying from IIM-B (Indian Institute of Management Bangalore) in India, he worked in the apex bank of India for a few years, after which he decided to go to Canada. After getting PR, he also got a good job in Canada, but now he fears that it will be difficult for him to bring his fiancee to Canada after marriage. Meena’s marriage is after the introduction of this rule, hence whether the spouse of the person getting PR will also get concession or not is not clear from the rules at present.

Meena’s future wife has come to India after studying in London and is interested in getting a job in Canada in the future, but because she does not know French, she fears that if she does not get a job due to lack of proficiency in French, then she will have to go to Canada. How will I survive? Kareena (name changed) says, “At present, I will be able to get only a tourist visa and whether I will be able to convert it into a work visa in the future or not, it is difficult to say because it is difficult to get a work visa. Currently, if the rules given are there, then If there is no concession, I will be able to stay in Canada with my husband only for 3 months i.e. as a guest.

Swati says that according to the rules existing today, I have got first division in every subject but since I do not know French, it will be difficult and a struggle for me to go to Canada. I had been preparing to go to Canada for many years and now when everything was in my favor, a rule is coming which may cause problems to many students like me.
