Flood wreaks havoc in Nepal, 170 people dead so far, 42 missing, schools and colleges closed

Nepal Flood Update: Due to heavy rains in India’s neighboring country Nepal, the problem of floods and landslides has arisen there. Flood water has entered large parts of the eastern and central areas of the country. According to the information given by Home Ministry officials, so far 170 people have lost their lives due to floods and landslides, while 42 are missing. Bagmati, the main river of Kathmandu, is flowing above the danger mark after torrential rains on Friday and Saturday. In view of the situation, the administration has closed all schools and colleges for three days.

People trapped in flood are being rescued

According to the information given by Home Ministry spokesperson Rishiram Pokharel, 111 people have been injured in flood-related incidents in the country. Pokharel said that search and rescue operations are going on with the help of all security agencies. He said that the Nepalese Army has airlifted 162 people stranded across the country. Apart from this, 4,000 people have been evacuated from the affected areas by Nepali Army, Nepal Police and Armed Police Force personnel and taken to safe places. All necessary relief materials including food grains have been distributed to the rescued people.

National highways are being disrupted due to landslides

Rishiram Pokharel said that national highways are being disrupted due to landslides and waterlogging. Because of this hundreds of people are stranded here. Continuous efforts are being made to open the blocked national highways. Apart from this, traffic has resumed on Tribhuvan Highway, the main land route connecting Kathmandu with other districts. According to officials, at least 322 houses and 16 bridges have been damaged in Nepal due to floods.

‘Never seen such devastating floods and waterlogging’

The devastating flood in Nepal is wreaking havoc. Eyewitnesses said that they have never seen such devastating floods and waterlogging in the Kathmandu Valley in 40-45 years. Arun Bhakta Shrestha, climate and environment expert at the International Center for Integrated Mountain Development (ICIMOD), said, ‘I have never seen floods on this scale in Kathmandu before’.

Scientists say that due to climate change, the amount and timing of rainfall is changing across Asia, but a major reason for the increasing impact of floods is human activities such as unplanned construction. Due to floods and landslides, life has become disrupted in many parts of the country. Many highways and roads have been disrupted, hundreds of houses and bridges have been damaged and hundreds of families have been displaced.

A report published by ICMOD on Saturday said the Bagmati, Kathmandu’s main river, was flowing above the danger mark after torrential rains lashed eastern and central Nepal on Friday and Saturday. It said that low pressure conditions over the Bay of Bengal and monsoon caused exceptionally heavy rainfall on Saturday.

Bus hit by landslide

At least 19 people died when a bus was buried in a landslide in Dhading district bordering Kathmandu on Saturday, officials said. Five people died when a house collapsed due to a landslide in Bhaktapur city. Six football players lost their lives and others were washed away in flood waters in a landslide incident at a training center run by the ‘All India Nepal Association’ in Makwanpur. Meanwhile, despite the forecast of rain continuing till Tuesday, there was some relief on Sunday.
