Imran Khan: Pakistan’s jailed former Prime Minister Imran Khan has applied to become Chancellor of Britain’s Oxford University. Syed Zulfiqar Bukhari, London-based spokesperson of Khan’s Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf Party (PTI), confirmed the matter to AFP. He said that Khan has instructed his team to submit the application. Bukhari said, ‘Imran Khan had instructed that he wants to submit his application and now the application will be examined.’
Bukhari said, ‘This is a formal post, but one of great prestige and importance. Imran Khan is one of the bigger and more popular names coming out of Oxford, so it would be great to see him as Chancellor.’ According to the Oxford University website, the list of candidates for the 10-year term of Chancellor will be made public in October. Voting for this is to be held at the end of the month. According to British media, other major applicants include former Foreign Secretary William Hague and former EU Trade Commissioner Peter Mandelson.
Imran will be the first person of Asian origin
In fact, in February, Hong Kong’s last British governor Chris Patten announced his resignation as Chancellor of Oxford. Bukhari said, ‘If Imran Khan becomes Chancellor of Oxford University, he will be the first person of Asian origin.’ Bukhari said that this would be an important achievement not only for Pakistan but for the whole of Asia and the world.
Imran Khan has a long association with Oxford
imran khan earned a degree in philosophy, politics and economics from Oxford in 1975. He frequently appeared in British gossip magazines during his cricket career. Khan served as Pakistan’s prime minister from 2018 to 2022. He recently spent a year in jail on charges ranging from corruption to inciting violence. He has claimed that these charges are politically motivated to prevent him from returning to power.
