Iran Hijab Law: A woman in Iran was shot by police for violating the hijab law. The incident happened last month. This 31-year-old woman was trying to escape in her car because she thought the police wanted to seize her car. Activists say that the police were ordered to seize her car because before this she had violated Iran’s hijab law by showing her hair while driving in public.
According to the Associated Press report, the woman was identified as Areju Badri. She has two children. The woman has been shot in the spine and is unable to walk. She is currently being treated at the police hospital. This woman is the latest victim of Iran’s renewed repression on wearing a scarf or hijab on the head. Two years ago, a woman was shot dead at that time. After which protests started across the country against women’s rights and the country’s theocracy.
bullet wound in the spine
A group of human rights activists in Iran spoke to people who were aware of the shooting. They said that the officers first shot at the tires of Badri’s car. While Badri was driving, the officers fired at the vehicle, which hit his spinal cord and damaged it.
Promised to simplify the law of hijab
Following Amini’s death, President Masoud Pezeshkian has promised to ease enforcement of the hijab law, but recent incidents such as the shooting of Badri and the recent video of a girl being abused on the streets of Tehran show that dangers still lie in wait for those who violate the law.
“They have made it the most serious crime, where police are basically allowed to shoot to kill. It’s really a war against women,” said Hadi Ghaemi, executive director of the New York-based Center for Human Rights in Iran.
The reason for stopping the car was not given
Activists on the case say Badri was shot dead on July 22 at 11 pm on a coastal road in Iran’s northern Mazandaran province as she returned home from a friend’s house with her sister. A brief account published by Iran’s state-run news agency IRNA quoted police Colonel Ahmad Amini as saying that patrol officers had ordered a car to stop, but the car did not stop. There was no mention of a hijab violation or a seizure notice.
It is not yet clear why the police stopped Badri’s car, though activists believe the reason was an alert issued for hijab violation.
