House Republicans New Report: US House Republicans on Sunday (September 8, 2024) released a report on their investigation into the US withdrawal from Afghanistan. The report accuses President Joe Biden’s administration of a disastrous end to America’s longest war.
At the same time, the report also underestimated the role of former President Donald Trump, who signed the withdrawal agreement with the Taliban. The biased review details the final months of military and civilian failures following Trump’s February 2020 withdrawal agreement, which allowed America’s radical Taliban enemy to penetrate and conquer the entire country even before the last US officials flew out on August 30, 2021. The chaotic withdrawal put many American citizens, Afghan battlefield allies, women activists and others at risk from the Taliban.
‘The Biden administration prioritized showmanship over security’
Texas Republican Rep. Michael McCaul, who led the investigation as chairman of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, said the GOP review shows the Biden administration had the information and the opportunity to take the steps necessary to plan for the inevitable collapse of the Afghan government so we could safely evacuate American personnel, American citizens, green card holders, and our brave Afghan allies. However, at every step, the administration prioritized spectacle over security.
White House said- the report is based on selected facts and prejudices
White House spokeswoman Sharon Yang said the Republican report was based on selective facts, mischaracterizations and pre-existing biases. “President Biden inherited a volatile situation due to the bad deal former President Trump made with the Taliban to exit Afghanistan by May 2021. He had two options… either escalate the US war against the strengthened Taliban, or end it,” Yang said in a statement.
Every warning from senior officers was ignored
The report, which follows more than 18 months of investigations by Republicans on the House Foreign Affairs Committee, said Biden and his administration undermined high-ranking officials and ignored warnings. Slowly, the Taliban took over Afghan territory, overthrowing an Afghan government and military that the US had spent nearly 20 years and trillions of dollars building in hopes of preventing the country from once again becoming a haven for anti-Western extremists.
