It has been informed in the report that the Drug Regulatory Authority of Pakistan had recommended changed prices of 105 medicines under the hardship category more than two years ago. In such a situation, they were stopped due to the increasing cost of production.

If Dawn is to be believed, DRAP has said that the cost of manufacturing has increased rapidly due to the cost of imported raw materials, electricity, fuel, packaging, transportation, labour, financing and the fall in the value of Pakistani rupee. At the same time, pharmaceutical companies say that the cost of production is no longer being recovered under the current pricing policy. Due to this the production has been reduced.

Chemists and Druggists Association warned

Meanwhile, Abdul Samad Buddani of Chemists and Druggists Association of Pakistan has warned that due to continuous shortage of genuine medicines, space is being created in the market for fake and poor quality products.

Now amidst these circumstances, pressure is being created on Pakistan’s health care system. According to The Express Tribune, earlier this month, house officers of Karachi’s Abbasi Shaheed Hospital intensified their protest over outstanding stipends, inadequate security and shortage of medicines. They had warned that if their demands were not met, they would stop the services of the Outpatient Department (OPD).
