Sheikh Hasina Statement: After leaving Bangladesh, former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina issued a statement for the first time on Tuesday (August 13). Sheikh Hasina’s son Sajeeb Wazed Roy shared her statement on the social media platform X. Sheikh Hasina has appealed to the people of Bangladesh to observe August 15 as a national mourning day with due respect and seriousness.
Referring to Bangabandhu Bhawan, Sheikh Hasina said, “The memorial, which was the basis of our existence, has turned into ashes. Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman was insulted. The blood of millions of martyrs was insulted. I demand justice from the countrymen.”
Sheikh Hasina remembered her father
Sheikh Hasina said, “This day marks an important and sad event for the country when the Father of the Nation of Bangladesh, Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, his wife Begum Fazilatunnesa and several members of their family, among others, were brutally murdered in 1975.”
In her statement, former PM Sheikh Hasina paid tribute to Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and his family members by reminding them of their brutal murder. She also remembered her mother, three brothers – freedom fighter Captain Sheikh Kamal, freedom fighter Lieutenant Sheikh Jamal, and 10-year-old Sheikh Russel – as well as other family members and close associates who were murdered.
Concern expressed over violence and loss
In her statement, she said, “The killings on 15 August 1975 had shocked the country and she still feels the memories of those dark days in her heart.” The former PM expressed concern over the losses incurred during the agitations and violence in the country since July and said that many innocent people lost their lives due to these incidents, including students, teachers, policemen, journalists, cultural workers, and other common citizens. She expressed grief over these incidents and demanded an investigation into these and punishment for the culprits.
