Nirav Modi and Vijay Mallya will soon be in India! PM Modi talked to UK PM on extradition

PM Modi In G20 Summit: Indian Prime Minister in Brazil during G-20 Summit Narendra Modi In the meeting between British Prime Minister and British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, there was discussion on giving a new direction to India-UK relations as well as taking action against fugitive economic criminals like Nirav Modi and Vijay Mallya. This is the first time that both the leaders have openly discussed this issue, which is likely to accelerate the matter.

According to Aaj Tak report, both the leaders agreed to speed up the processes related to migration and extradition. PM Modi raised the issue of strict action against fugitives like Nirav Modi and Vijay Mallya with British PM Keir Starmer. Apart from this, cooperation in the fields of economy, trade, technological innovation, and green economy was also discussed. During this, PM Modi stressed the need to speed up the extradition cases of India and Britain.

Nirav Modi accused in PNB scam
PNB scam is one of the biggest scams in Indian banking history. From where Nirav Modi committed a fraud of 2 billion dollars and escaped to Britain. In March 2018, news was received about Nirav that he was in Britain. He has applied for political asylum there. But the Indian government is trying to extradite him. In June 2019, Swiss authorities froze his assets and bank accounts, worth a total of $6 million, in the fraud case.

Vijay Mallya ‘willful defaulter’ case
Vijay Mallya is accused of failing to repay huge loans taken from Indian banks. Mallya was found guilty of contempt of court in 2017 for transferring $40 million to his children. For this, in July 2022, the Supreme Court sentenced Mallya to four months in jail and fine.

Impact on India-UK strategic partnership
Action against fugitives like Nirav Modi and Vijay Mallya can prove to be an important step in increasing transparency and trust in India-UK relations. For this, the decision to expedite migration and extradition cases is a positive sign for both the countries. This initiative will also put pressure on other economic criminals to take action.
