Ken Juster, former US Ambassador to India, has said an important thing regarding the changes that have been seen in India’s foreign policy in the last few years. He believes that a major reason for this change was the Prime Minister’s decision in 2014. Narendra Modi has to come to power. According to Ken Juster, under the leadership of Prime Minister Modi, India has shown more confidence in its relations with the world. India is now making contacts with more countries than before and is also expanding the scope of its relations. This means that India now wants to strengthen its presence not just in a limited area but at the global level.
India’s role in major decisions of the world
Ken Juster said that in the time of PM Modi, India is seeing itself as a power which wants to play its role in major decisions of the world. India’s activism on the international stage has increased and it is trying to further strengthen its identity in the global community. Even in the matter of trade, India’s attitude seems to have changed to some extent. Now India is showing a little more openness than before, but not completely. India is trying to strengthen its relations with the countries of Asia. It is especially focusing on improving relations with its neighboring countries like Bangladesh, Nepal and Sri Lanka.
India’s wisdom in international trade agreements
According to Ken Juster, India also wants to work more closely with ASEAN countries. India is seeing new opportunities in these areas and wants to use them in a better way. However, this does not mean that India is ready to join every kind of international trade agreement. India has kept itself away from RCEP i.e. Regional Economic Cooperation Partnership. Apart from this, it has not shown much interest in joining even a big trade agreement like CPTPP. This makes it clear that India is taking decisions keeping its interests in mind and is not in a hurry to join every agreement.
