Fire chief Pavel Tovar did not clarify whether the dead were on the plane or in damaged cars on the highway near the city’s airport.

The military plane had earlier taken off from the city of Santa Cruz and crashed after skidding off the runway in El Alto and landing on a nearby road, according to local officials.

Local media outlet Unitel, citing the Bolivian Defense Ministry, said the plane was carrying currency to the interior of the country. National airline Boliviana de Aviation said in a statement that El Alto International Airport was temporarily closed after the crash, adding that the plane involved in the crash was not part of its fleet.
