Bangladesh Protest: The fire of reservation in Bangladesh consumed the politics of Sheikh Hasina Hasina and she had to resign from the post of Prime Minister and leave the country. After this, the new interim government is taking shape. It is expected that the new government will be formed within a day or two. Amidst all this, it will be interesting to see who will become the next Prime Minister of Bangladesh?
A meeting was held at the residence of Bangladesh President Mohammad Shahabuddin in which the heads of the country’s army, navy and air force along with leaders of political parties and members of civil society took part. After this, both the parliament and the government were dissolved. After Sheikh Hasina, the discussion of three names is gaining momentum. These include the names of former Prime Minister Khaleda Zia, Nobel Prize winner Mohammad Yunus and student leader Nahid Islam.
Who is Khaleda Zia?
Khaleda Zia is the former Prime Minister of Bangladesh. In 1991, she became the country’s first woman Prime Minister. She is currently 78 years old and it is said that her health is not good. She won the election again in 1996 but major opposition parties, including Sheikh Hasina’s Awami League, boycotted the elections. Her second term lasted for 12 days. After this, new elections were held, in which Sheikh Hasina won.
Khaleda Zia returned to power after five years. In 2007, she was arrested on corruption charges. In 2018, she was convicted and sent to jail, but due to several health problems, she has had to spend most of her time in hospital since then. In such a situation, it is not clear whether she will assume the post of Prime Minister if she is elected?
Who is Muhammad Yunus?
Muhammad Yunus is a Nobel Peace Prize winner. He was awarded this award in 2006 for establishing Grameen Bank, a microfinance organization working towards community development in Bangladesh. He founded Grameen Bank in 1983. This bank gives small loans to women in rural Bangladesh to start small businesses. This helped millions of people to come out of poverty, earning him the nickname ‘banker of the poor’. This model is now being run in more than 100 countries. He has a PhD from Vanderbilt University. He has also headed the department at Chittagong University.
Who is Nahid Islam?
Sociology student Nahid Islam served as the national coordinator for the ‘Students Against Discrimination’ movement, which demanded reform of the quota system for government jobs. In announcements and statements made last night, Islam claimed that the outline of the interim government would be revealed within 24 hours. Nahid Islam has been vocal against Sheikh Hasina’s party, calling them terrorists on the streets. In July, he was kidnapped from a house in Sabujbagh by at least 25 people in plainclothes.
