Bangladesh News: Mohammad Yunus, Chief Advisor to the Interim Government of Bangladesh, has made an important announcement regarding the general elections in the country. Yunus said that Bangladesh’s general elections could be held between the end of 2025 and the first half of 2026. This announcement has come at a time when the pressure from political parties to hold elections is increasing.

Yunus gave information about the possible dates of the elections in his address on state television on Monday, 16 December. He said, “I have always insisted that elections should be held only after completing the necessary electoral reforms.”

Also raised the possibility of delay in elections
Yunus also said that if political parties agree to accurate voter lists and other basic reforms, elections can be held by the end of November 2025. However, if the entire list of reforms is implemented, the elections may be delayed by a few months.

Scenario after the fall of Sheikh Hasina government
77-year-old former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina had to resign on August 5 due to violent student protests in July 2023. After thousands of protesters marched towards the Prime Minister’s residence, Hasina was taken to Agartala, India and then to a hidden airbase in Ghaziabad near Delhi. Sheikh Hasina is currently living at an undisclosed location in India. After his resignation, on August 8, Mohammad Yunus was appointed the chief advisor of the interim government.

Emphasis on reforms in elections
Mohammad Yunus made it clear in his address that electoral reforms are the priority of the interim government. He said that through reforms the election process will be made more transparent and fair.

Political instability and the future of Bangladesh
Bangladesh is facing political instability after the fall of Sheikh Hasina government. The announcement of upcoming elections has increased the possibilities of dialogue between political parties. However, the biggest challenge now will be to reach a consensus on electoral reforms and their timeline.
